About Hope Marketplace

Our mission is to bring together a marketplace of goods and ideas supporting freedom from human trafficking and sexual exploitation.
"Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy."
-Proverbs 31:8-9

Hope Marketplace is a social enterprise consisting of a small, but dedicated, team of people who feel called to do something to fight sexual slavery and exploitation. We are people with different work experience and backgrounds who have come to understand the rampant sexual exploitation going on in the world, both near and far. We are not experts on this form of injustice, we don’t have education in related fields, but we care enough to invest our time and energy in hopes of contributing to the abolition movement. We are committed to having a part in bringing hope to individuals who have suffered greatly.

One of the ways we seek to fulfill our mission is by facilitating conversation. We strive to bring together people at all stages of involvement in the fight against modern day slavery, and to create a synergy as we move toward abolition. Our site is designed to be a source of information- from the basics of modern day slavery and resources to learn more, to an updated blog, current articles, and upcoming events. We agree with this quote: “All that is necessary for evil to triumph is that good men do nothing.” (Edmond Burke) And we don’t want to “do nothing.” It is our desire that this marketplace be a launching point that leads to much greater things being done in the fight against this injustice.

Hope Marketplace is also a place to shop for beautiful, unique goods that have been handmade by survivors of sex trafficking or exploitation. Our jewelry, paper products, purses, lotions and other handicrafts are great conversation starters as well as meaningful gifts. We purchase products that come from around the world and then sell the merchandise in our online shop and at gatherings of any size. Hope Marketplace sales help to raise awareness of the global epidemic while creating demand for the products made by the organizations we buy from internationally and domestically.

The organizations we support use the teaching of handicraft skills as a means of contributing to the survivors’ future financial independence. The process of making objects of beauty is also therapeutic; using their hands for meaningful purposes while being in a safe, loving environment facilitates healing. In addition, many of the organizations we support are faith-based, giving the survivors the opportunity for renewal at the deepest level. Through these ministries the women and girls are able to pray, study the Bible, and hear Jesus’ invitation to “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

When faced with a crime of this magnitude we can become paralyzed. To be sure the statistics are alarming- There are an estimated 12 million people enslaved in the sex industry. And human trafficking is now the fastest growing international business, generating an estimated $19 billion dollars annually. It is staggering. But we know that behind the statistics is the one- the one individual life that has worth and value. The one individual who deserves to be treated with dignity. The one individual who we want to have hope.
